At present, the range of this species is greater in Nevada and Arizona than in Utah (Hawker 2016), although the main subpopulation centre is in the area around St. George, Utah (Hoshstätter 2000). Subpopulations occur along sandiest areas along roads around Hurricane, Utah and east into Zion National Park and toward Colorado City, Utah. It is common along Interstate 15 northeast of Mesquite in the Virgin River gorge. The apparent northernmost subpopulation is scattered along NV 319 east of Panaca, Nevada (Hawker 2016). In some areas, subpopulations grow with the globally imperiled Pediocactus sileri (Engelm.) L. Benson and Sclerocactus blainei Welsh & Thorne (NatureServe 2019). Plants tentatively identified as Y. utahensis within Grand Canyon are most abundant in the Inner Gorge, from approximately river mile 85 downriver to Lake Mead (river mile 277), where they usually grow on limestone, sandstone or various other soils, rarely sandy soils. Yuccas upstream from this area within the Canyon may be introgressed with Yucca angustissima (SEINet 2017, W. Hodgson pers. comm. 2018).

The type locality is 2 metres northwest of St. George in the Santa Clara Valley (Reveal 1977), an area where almost all of the initial collecting of Yucca utahensis occurred (Hawker 2016) and is considered to be the main population center (Hoshstätter 2000). Much development has and continues to occur in this area and efforts to relocate the type locality has thus far been unsuccessful (W. Hodgson pers. comm. 2018). In addition, off road vehicles, especially in sandy habitats in this area may be a threat to this species as well.

It occurs within Zion National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Valley of Fire State Park, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Cathedral Gorge State Park (Hawker 2016).
Yucca utahensis was last reviewed on 22 January (and last changed) as having a Global Status level of G5T3?, a Rounded Global Statetus of T3-Vulnerable, and a National Status of NNR according to NatureServe (2019).
