Threats to Yucca potosina are the extraction of gypsum and limestone for the cement industry. Most of the habitat of this species is overgrazed by goats and cattle.

A portion of the population of Yucca potosina is found in the Reserva Ecológica Estatal Real de Guadalcázar the Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna de Sierra de Álvarez, San Luis Potosí and in the northwestern portion of the Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra Gorda in Guanajuato. Several botanical gardens in Mexico and United States have specimens in their collections.
