The density of this species tends to vary. Subpopulations of Yucca filamentosa present in granite outcrops are comprise of 20 or more individuals, and are isolated by several kilometres of mesic forest (Massey and Hamrick 1998). However, subpopulations of Y. filamentosa in sandy substrates cover larger areas (Massey and Hamrick 1998).

The species used to have an extensive continuous distribution, but due to agriculture practices its habitat is now fragmented.
