There are few known threats to this species. However, its montane grassland could be damaged in the future if wildfires became more frequent or if the invasive Pinus patula spreads significantly. In addition, the present light grazing by domestic livestock in the Mozambique part of its range may became more intense.

The majority of records of the species are from Nyanga National Park, although some records lie just outside the national park. Populations in Mozambique are not under any protection. It is listed as probably Vulnerable in Flora Zambesiaca (Kativu 2008).
