This species is threatened as a consequence of overall habitat decline and degradation due to overgrazing substrate damage by introduced wild boar, fallow deer and mouflon (Russo 2009).

This species is present on Isola di Marettimo, a site of community importance under the Habitats Directive (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2017). The species was listed as Vulnerable by Raimondo et al. (2011). There are no conservation measures in place; there is an urgent need for control of alien ungulate populations and to establish a monitoring protocol.
