État de la populationExpert

The population is estimated as 100,000–150,000 individuals (Thanos et al. 2015). Although its population underwent a recent decline due to the construction of an irrigation infrastructure, the population trend seems to be currently stable based on the results of an undergoing monitoring project led by the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania.

Description complète des menacesExpert

In the past, part of the distribution area and population were reduced due to the construction of an artificial water reservoir for agricultural land irrigation, but current local conditions seem to be stable. Agricultural intensification, particularly annual Graminae, changes in agricultural practices and the development of agricultural infrastructures are ongoing activities taking place in the area, which could pose a critical threat to the species' habitat in the future.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

The entire population of the species is located inside the Natura 2000 site 'Lefka Ori Kai Paraktia Zoni' (Site Code: GR4340008). Seeds have been collected and are stored at the seed bank of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania. Because it is a narrow endemic to this particular NATURA 2000 site, its population size has been estimated and is being monitored since 2014.

A conservation plan for this species has to be designed. Additional taxonomic research is also recommended.
