État de la populationExpert
The species is widespread along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of North Africa. The entire known distribution of the species could comprise 5-7 subpopulations, with one large subpopulation distributed along the Atlantic Moroccan coast. The subpopulation known from Gouraya Mountain, in eastern Algeria, is very small with only 15 individuals occupying calcareous rocks in less than 2x2 m2 (Khellaf pers. comm. 2016).

In Malta, only one subpopulation of this species has been found on the northeastern coast of the country, but this has not being recorded for at least ten years and therefore its continued existence on the Maltese islands is seriously doubted (S. Mifsud pers. obs. 2015).

Description complète des menacesExpert
Although the species currently occurs in inaccessible places and protected areas, quarrying and mining is a potential threat. This is suspected to have been the cause of loss for an important area of potential habitat on Gouraya Mountain in Algeria, where there are two active quarries, one of them located less than 800 m away from one of the known localities (R. Khellaf pers. comm. 2016). Based on past records, it could be suspected that the species was previously more widely distributed and occurred in lowland areas that could have been impacted by urbanization and infrastructure development (S. Mifsud pers. comm. 2016). There is no information available on the probable loss of the species from Malta (S. Mifsud pers. comm. 2016).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
The species is partially present in protected areas (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2017). The subpopulation from Gouraya Mountain has been targeted for designation as an Important Plant Area (IPA) and is within the Gouraya National Park (Radford et al. 2011). The species is included in the Red List of the Maltese Islands (Lanfranco 1989). More research on taxonomy at infraspecific level, population monitoring, as well as confirmation of the presence of the plant on Malta, are needed.
