The population size appears to be large, with an estimate of more than 10,000 mature individuals. This species currently does have survival problems. Therefore, it is considered the current population trend is stable (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019). It has been reported that bears that live near Miquihuana and La Marcela on the boundaries between the states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo León feed on this species. It is unknown if such activity will have any significant negative impact on the population trend (Hernández-Sandoval pers. comm. 2019).
