It has been considered a common species. Due to habitat threats (deforestation due to land use change), it is assumed that the population trend of the species is declining. The population size appears to be less than 1,000 mature individuals and the current population trend is decreasing (Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2022).

The habitat loss of this species is a major threat and is caused by human pressures on the land. Changing land use is causing the removal of natural vegetation (Wilken et al. 2011). The expansion of the agriculture frontier and livestock ranching in the range are occurring, which has caused direct mortality as well as the continuing decline of EOO and habitat quality.

There are no current conservation actions in place and the species is not known from any ex situ collections (BGCI 2022). Non-agricultural and non-livestock activities are needed to avoid continuing intensive change of land use. It would be beneficial to recommend sustainable production and livelihood alternatives in the region. In addition, it is suggested to monitor the habitat and population trends.
