This is a very abundant species in Spain and Portugal, with an stable population. In Spain it has been recorded in 379 localities; estimations carried out only for the regions of Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla León surpass the 100,000 individuals (Ríos et al. 2009, as N. pallidulus). In Portugal, it is found in 177 localities (Commission of the European Communities 2009).

The abandonment of the traditional ecosystem management practices is a threat in a short-medium term due to the positive effect of extensive grazing in maintaining or increasing the population size in some subpopulations (Ríos et al. 2010). According to Caldas et al. (2011), invasive species and, in France, seabirds and coypus eating the bulbs are a serious threat.

Forest fires along with wood overexploitation in woodlands and scrublands in Central Spain could be a major threat to the species due to the wide presence of this plant in the mentioned environments (Palacios et al. 2010). However, big populations have been observed after forest fires in some localities, which seems to be an indication that fires would improve competence conditions in certain cases (J. Juan Vicedo pers. comm. 2015). 

The increasing interests on the galanthamine-related alkaloid content of the Amaryllidaceae for pharmaceutical purposes (Hanks 2002, Berkov et al. 2014) would represent a threat in the near future, since plants from natural habitats remain an important source of these bioactive substances for the pharmaceutical industry (Berkov et al.  2011), mainly for mesembrane alkaloid alternative source (Pigni et al. 2013).

The species is present in several protected areas, e.g. the Cabañeros National Park (under the name N. triandrus subsp. pallidulus) or the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park in Spain (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2017). Outside the Mediterranean region, it is important to remark that most of the French subpopulation occurs in protected areas and is subject to a species recovery plan.

This plant is included in the Annexes II and IV of the Habitat Directive (EEC 1992) and categorized as Least Concern (LC) in the IUCN European Red List (Caldas et al. 2011, Bilz et al. 2011). The species is legally protected at national level in Spain (Moreno 2008), Portugal (Ministério do Ambiente e do Ordenamento do Territorio 2005), France (Danton and Baffray1995) and Malta (Government of Malta 2006). It is also protected under regional legislation in Andalucía (BOJA 2012) and the Basque Country (Aizpuru et al. 2010).

It is subject of ex situ conservation strategies, particularly seeds are stored for long-term conservation at the Botanical Garden Torretes, Research Institute CIBIO-University of Alicante (Spain) and in the Museu Nacional d'História Natural Seed Bank in Lisbon (Portugal), and an active living collection in managed at the Botanical Garden Torretes. As a complementary strategy for ex situ conservation, a stock of in vitro cultures was established, with a good rate of bulb multiplication achieved (Juan Vicedo et al. 2015).
