Two small groups with less than 100 individuals are currently known, but an approximate population size could not be estimated. Both of them are situated along the same stream and separated by a road with no more than 25 m between them. There is a clear declining trend in the population size. Seed productivity (number of seeds/fruit) in this species seems to be very low compared with other related taxa.

The closely related species N. yepesii can be found in the surroundings. Two natural hybrid subpopulations between N. segurensis and N. yepesii can be found in pasture open areas or under the canopy of Pinus secondary forest with Crataegus. Estimations carried out of the population size of this hybrid found more than 5,000 individuals. The hybrid individuals display much vigorous shape, and probably constitute a future problem for the maintenance of the original genotype of N. segurensis.

The main plausible potential threats to this species are changes in land use and hydrological regimes (e.g. water abstraction or derivation would alter the soil humidity), livestock trampling, and the abandonment of traditional and sustainable management practices in a near future, since abandonment would favour an excessive of coverage by the scrubs and lianas that would impede the accessibility for pollination of the flowers. The uncontrolled harvesting of seeds and bulbs for commercial purposes or the pharmaceutical industry known in the past for other taxa (Hanks 2002, Berkov et al. 2011, Berkov et al. 2014) is an additional plausible risk to bear in mind for this rare plant.

All known subpopulations are present in the protected area Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2017). It is listed as Data Deficient at the national level as a (Moreno et al. 2008). It has not yet being listed at the regional level of Andalucía (Blanca et al. 2002). Regarding ex situ conservation measures in place, some seed samples and a living plant collection are maintained in Torretes Botanical Garden, Research Institute CIBIO, University of Alicante.

Additional research to clarify the taxonomic status of this species is urgently needed. Site protection is recommended as the species occurs in private land within a protected area.
