État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
It is a local and fairly common species. As far as population size is concerned, no precise count has ever been undertaken, however the total number of mature individuals is estimated to be less than 1,000, and the abundance of the species is inferred to have been significantly reduced in recent years (Peltier 1976, 1978, Fernández Casas 1996, 1999, Benabid 2002, Valdés 2002, Fennane and Ibn Tattou 2008, Clayton et al. 2006, Dobignard and Chatelain 2010, Rankou et al. 2013).

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
The population and habitats are inferred to be declining due to habitat fragmentation and deterioration as a result of urban and tourism development, as well as infrastructure development. Overgrazing, trampling, random cutting, deforestation and irregular fires increase soil erosion and are highly frequent and strong in the Atlas Mountains. More generally, the species is threatened by specimen collection, agricultural intensification, water pollution and the decline of wetlands due to long periods of drought and climate change (RBOSM 2008).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
It is present in protected areas such as Réserve de Biosphère de l'Arganeraie (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2017). There are no conservation measures in place. The following actions are recommended to protect the species and its habitats:
- Protection of the species sites from habitat loss and fragmentation, deforestation and overgrazing.
- Fencing vulnerable sites to protect the species from collection and trampling.
- Creation of protected areas to ensure complete regeneration of the species, ecosystems and to restore the quality of wild environments.
- Ex situ conservation: artificial propagation, re-introduction, seed collections.
- Monitoring and surveillance of the existing populations and sites.
- Estimation of population sizes and study of their dynamics, trends, biology and ecology.
- Legal protection of the species (list of protected species in Morocco) and enforcement of existing legal protection measures in Morocco
- Participative approaches with communities and local people for implementing the conservation actions.
