Narcissus obesus

Some subpopulations of this species living on sea cliffs are threatened by invasive species such as Carpobrotus edulis. In central Portugal, some subpopulations are impacted by quarrying activities and, at a smaller scale, forest plantations. The impact of flower collection and bulb harvesting of wild populations is still unknown.

Most of the global population of this plant does not face conservation issues throughout its distribution range, although it may be locally threatened in some areas (Fennane and Ibn Tattou 1998). In the Iberian Peninsula, although threats have been reported, several large subpopulations occur within protected areas (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2017) such as natural parks and Natura 2000 sites (e.g. Arrábida, Costa Sudoeste, Serra de Aire and Candeeiros in Portugal, and Los Alcornocales in Spain), ensuring the conservation of suitable habitat for this species. In Morocco, Fennane and Ibn Tattou (1998) report this plant to be extremely rare and its subpopulations and their habitats may need more protection measures. Also, further research is required in order to clear the existing taxonomic doubts, as well as to better understand the distribution, utilization and threats.
