The species is distributed in two main population groups corresponding to two different mountains systems: one in the northern part of the range (Sierra de Segura, Cazorla and Alcaraz), corresponding with the distribution of Narcissus nevadensis subsp. enemeritoi, and one in the southern part of the range (Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Baza), corresponding with the distribution of Narcissus nevadensis subsp. nevandensis. In the northern part, there is a complex of taxa whose status can vary under different interpretations (S. Ríos and P. García Murillo pers. comm. 2015).

The total population size for Narcissus nevadensis subsp. nevadensis has been estimated at 23,598 individuals; new subpopulations have been found in recent years (Gutiérrez et al. 2004).

According to Gutierrez Carretero et al. (2011), Narcissus nevadensis subsp. enemeritoi had a population of around 120 individuals in 2003 (Sánchez Gómez et al. 2004); critical regressive population trends have been observed since the taxon was discovered.

The taxon is subject to extreme fluctuations of the number of mature individuals due to the impact of climatic variations and the alteration of the hydrological regimes on this species and its specific and fragile habitat, and probably also because of the impacts from livestock activities. The species remains in several small isolated population groups with no connectivity, but severe fragmentation is uncertain.

Description complète des menacesExpert
The main threat to this species living near pure-water springs is habitat modification or destruction due to changes in the hydrological regime such as water diversion and abstraction for small human settlements. These facilities are installed directly on the water upwelling, impeding natural water flow and thus reducing soil humidity or even desiccating potential habitats. Collection for ornamental purposes is an important threat for the species. The species can be also collected by its alkaloid content for pharmaceutical purposes. Populations growing up to 1,800 m asl are at risk from habitat degradation or loss due to tourism for winter sports activities. Felicisimo (2011) pointed out the high risk of extinction that this plant has in future climate scenarios.

Gutierrez Carretero et al. (2011) reported modifications in hydrological regimes and watercourses, trampling, collection, and grazing by herbivores as the main threats to Narcissus nevadensis subsp. enemeritoi.

Narcissus nevadensis subsp. nevadensis occurs in a very specific habitat and this makes it fragile towards anthropogenic influences, climatic and hydrological changes. Grazing is also an important threat as it can reduce fructification due to trampling and plant predation (Gutiérrez et al. 2004).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

The species is predominantly present in protected areas, e.g. the Natural 2000 site of SCI Sierra de Villafuerte (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2017).

This taxon is listed as priority species on Annex II of the Habitats Directive (EEC 1992) and under Appendix I of the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, the Bern Convention (Council of Europe 2010, Gutierrez Carretero et al. 2011). It is included as Endangered in the Spanish national catalogue of threatened species (Moreno 2008).

Narcissus nevadensis subsp. enemeritoi is listed Endangered in the regional catalogue of protected wild flora of Murcia (Sánchez et al. 2002). It is listed as Critically Endangered in the Red List of Spanish Vascular Flora (Moreno 2008).

Narcissus nevadensis subsp. nevadensis is listed as Endangered in the Red List Spanish Vascular Flora (Moreno 2008) and Endangered in the regional catalogue of threatened wild flora of Andalucía (Blanca et al. 2000). Population monitoring and a species recovery plan have been developed for this taxon and seeds are stored in the germplasm banks of Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada and Banco de Germoplasma Vegetal Andaluz.

Water resource use control is urgent to regulate. More research is necessary to clarify its taxonomic status and, in particular, the genetics of Narcissus spp. in the southeast of Spain. Population and habitat monitoring, habitat protection (e.g. through the creation of micro-reserves), and control of livestock grazing, disturbance by visitors and bulb collection are also are recommended conservation measures.
