Grazing is an important threat to the species, as many plants are observed with no flowering stems, thus affecting the sexual reproduction and seedling emergence. In addition, expansion of cultivated areas, use of pesticides and residential development also affect the species but to a lesser degree.

The species is protected by Law 3937/2011 as an endemic taxon. It occurs in at least 20 Natura 2000 SCI sites, covering approximately 21-30% of its population. Seeds are stored at the Seed Bank of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania. Reaserch regarding the population size and trend is considered important in order to also study the effect of grazing on the population.
