Muscari coeruleum

The threats to this species include intensive grazing on summer pastures and the collection of the flowers by local people (Mordak undated). As it is thought that reproduction is most likely by seed this is likely to impact on the population as a result of lowered reproductive success. Also damage may occur as a result of recreational activity in these scenic areas (Bardunow and Novikov (Eds) 2008). The Bolchoi Tkhach Mountain Nature Reserve where this species occurs is reported to have very little or no conservation action taking place and has some ongoing threats, for example, from livestock farming and recreational activities (Birdlife International 2016).

This species is listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia (Zernov 2013), North Ossetia, Adygeya and Sotshi (cited in Bardunow and Novikov (Eds) 2008) and on the list of protected plants in Krasnodar Krai (Mordak undated, Akatov 2008). It is also listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation as Category 2  and in the Red List of Endemic Plants of the Caucasus as Near Threatened (Bardunow and Novikov (Eds). 2008, Schatz et al. 2014). It is conserved ex situ, for example, in the botanic gardens in Bonn (Systax 2009) and collection data notes that it is conserved within the Millennium Seed Bank of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. It occurs within the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve and legislation was recommended for a ban on collection (Mordak undated). Also recommended are the establishment of a buffer zone along the borders of the reserve and monitoring of the populations (Akatov 2008). It is also listed as occurring in the Kabardino-Balkarski High Mountains Reserve where the conservation measures needed for the site are reported to be comprehensively and effectively implemented (BirdLife International 2016). It is also reported from the North Ossetia High Mountains Reserve and Bolchoi Tkhach Mountain Nature Reserve (Bardunow and Novikov (Eds) 2008).
