This species is threatened by ongoing habitat loss at some of its known locations. The subpopulation at "Portuguese Bridge" near Debre Markos has declined significantly due to impact from grazing: recent surveys have found very few plants there whereas it used to be locally abundant (Sebsebe Demissew pers. comm.), although it would be desirable to check this site over several seasons to see if the species can return in favourable climatic conditions. More generally, the whole area of northern Shewa and Gojam within its range has extensive agricultural activity and conversion of natural habitat. For example, at Debre Libanos there has been agricultural expansion except around the church where the habitats are protected (Sebsebe Demissew pers. obs.). At Goro in Bale, there is intensive agriculture including commercial farmland (Sileshi Nemomissa pers. obs.).
