État de la populationExpert
This species is widespread, abundant and common where it occurs. Recent surveys over 14 localities through its distribution in Spain found that the habitats of this species in four localities between Granada and Almeria, and in the northern part of its distribution at Valencia and Castellon, are severely degraded due to goat overgrazing and individuals are scarce (Rios et al. 2013).

As far as the population size is concerned, no precise count has ever been made and the trend of the population remains unknown due to the lack of quantitative data.

Description complète des menacesExpert
This species is threatened locally by the direct and indirect impact of human activities such as overgrazing, infrastructure and urban development and agricultural intensification. As with other taxa of the family Amaryllidaceae there is a strong potential threat of over-harvesting of bulbs for natural alkaloid extraction.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
This species is present in several protected areas throughout its range (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2017). It occurs in five habitats of European Community Interest (EEC 1992, Rios et al. 2013). The following actions are recommended to protect the species and its habitats, especially in North Africa:
  • Public awareness rising and priorities identification.
  • Ex situ conservation: artificial propagation, re-introduction, seed collections.
  • Additional research to estimate of population sizes and study of their dynamics, trends, biology and ecology, and monitoring and surveillance of the existing populations and habitats.
  • Legal protection of the species and enforcement through collection or digging up bans, and legislation (e.g., to protect and the enhance the environment and carry out studies of impact).
