État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
This plant is always solitary and does not form colonies. The population density of Hesperoyucca newberryi was estimated by counting the number of observed mature individuals along a ten mile stretch of river (between Cove Canyon and Fern Cove) in July 2017. On the north side 48 plants were observed; on the south side 130+ plants were observed. Extrapolating this population density to the area occupied by the species (an additional 100 miles) results in an estimated population size of about 1800. However, this is likely an underestimation of the population size and more research is recommended (W. Hodgson et al. 2019).
Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
In the past, habitat and subpopulations were lost during the formation of Lake Mead in the late 1930's. There are currently no evident threats to Hesperoyucca newberryi and no documentation of population decline has been undertaken. Climate change in the form of prolonged droughts is a threat to the species, possibly affecting not only seed germination but the plant's ability to flower and the abundance and behaviour of the obligate pollinator, which in turn would affect seed set in Hesperoyucca newberryi. Monitoring population size for potential decline and pollination studies are necessary to better assess threats to population stability. The combination of small overall population size, low density, monocarpic reproduction and obligate pollination potentially place this species at higher risk/higher sensitivity to potential threats.
