So far, only two subpopulations of Furcraea martinezii are known. The population size appears to be fairly small with an estimated less than 2,500 mature individuals. The number of mature individuals is experiencing a continuous decline due to the conversion of many natural landscapes into agricultural-livestock lands, causing direct mortality. In fact, a continuing decline in the mature individuals of at least 20% is estimated to occur in the future (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019).

The main threat for Furcraea martinezii is habitat destruction and fragmentation of ecosystems. The primary contemporary drivers of tropical forest biodiversity loss include direct effects of human activities such as the land-use change for expansion of agriculture and cattle ranching (Wilken et al. 2011).

There are no current conservation actions in place. This species is  known from four ex situ collections (BGCI 2019) and is probably still grown in a wider range of botanic gardens. In situ conservation would be beneficial with support for non-agricultural and non-livestock activities to avoid change of land use in the region with sustainable production and livelihood alternatives. In addition, monitoring of the habitat and population trends is recommended.
