This species is known from only one location, which is comprised of two small sites. It is rare, occurs only in sparse groups, and is increasingly difficult to find in the wild.

Recent earthquakes have resulted in the loss of a significant portion of the population, as it occurs on cliff faces and many mature individuals were lost. Over-collecting of the species has also resulted in a significant decline, as the species is sold to tourists resulting in loss of many mature individuals. Remaining individuals are at severe risk of being over-collected since they are not protected and demand is increasing.
