Encina-Dominguez and collaborators (2013) reported that Dasylirion cedrosanum density varied between 193 and 705 individuals per hectare. In fact, Dasylirion cedrosanum is the most abundant species of the genus. The population size appears to be large, and it is considered the current population trend is stable (E. Martinez Salas pers. comm. 2019). However, the effects of human utilization of this species on its population trend in the future are unknown. It is likely the population is subject to continued decline in the future due to the increased exploitation of this species in recent years. Future studies may well show this plant to be less abundant than presently believed.

The main threat for this species is wild extraction, which is increasing. Although this species is not currently experiencing any severe impact, the effects of the harvesting of this species on the structure of its population are unknown. Further studies are needed to better understand its dynamics and to be able to suggest more adequate regulations for its commercial harvesting (Encina-Dominguez et al. 2013, E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019).

Dasylirion cedrosanum occurs in the Flora and Fauna Protection Area "Cuatrociénegas" (Coahuila). This species is known from six ex situ collections (BGCI 2019). Undoubtedly, there is a need to design management plans in order to minimize the impacts of human disturbance on this species, as well as to prevent a potential shrinkage of range.
