This species can form large populations where it occurs. There is no information on overall population trends, however losses due to dam construction mean that it is almost certainly declining.

Dam construction upstream in Yunnan and Tibet will affect the flow regime in the Mekong, which will have an adverse effect on populations throughout the river system. Existing dam construction and the dams proposed for the main channel of the Mekong will cause local extinction of populations. This species is also threatened by the direct and secondary effects of logging and clear-felling the banks or floodplain of the river. It is also likely to be threatened by over-grazing during the dry season.
