État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
No accurate counts of individuals have been made for this species. However, the species is locally abundant on Manawatawhi / Great Island, and scarce on North East and South West Islands in the Manawatawhi / Three Kings Island group. It is uncommon on the adjacent Te Paki portion of Te Ika a Maui / North Island, where there are scattered occurrences in Unuwhao Forest and at North Cape. It is, however, locally abundant on Murimotu Island, and also further south on the Poor Knights Islands (Aorangi and Tawhiti Rahi) in the upper Hauraki Gulf. There are unsubstantiated reports of Cordyline obtecta from the Hen & Chicken Islands as well. A total population estimate of up to 10,000 mature individuals seems not unreasonable.
On Norfolk Island, Cordyline, though present, is generally uncommon but seems secure in its habitats. Some plants are present in the small forest reserves around the island however it most common within the Norfolk Island National Park. The species is also commonly grown in island gardens. In 1998 the author estimated a total population of 2,000–3,000 mature wild plants.

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Cordyline obtecta within the Aotearoa / New Zealand part of its range is known from two major offshore island groups, a small near shore island and in scattered sites in Te Paki (Unuwhao / North Cape). The largest subpopulations are on Manawatawhi / Three Kings and the Poor Knights Island which are Nature Reserves. On those islands the main threat is animal pest and plant incursions and fire. Both island groups are monitored closely by the New Zealand Department of Conservation and iwi who exercise mana whenua (traditional ownership) over those island groups. Outside those islands Cordyline obtecta is less common and subjected to a greater risk of loss from fire, browsing animals and competition from woody plants. On Norfolk Island the species is mostly uncommon but appears secure in the natural sites it occupies.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
Biosecurity of Manawatawhi / Three Kings Islands and Poor Knights Islands is critical to ensure the security of the indigenous vegetation and associated endemics. Cordyline obtecta is, however, one of the least threatened of the endemic island plants because it does not seem to be susceptible to Phytophthora and Fusarium wilt which threaten many of the other endemic plants. The species is potentially threatened by fire (human induced or otherwise) as the island sites it is most common in are remote, so a fire would be difficult to detect from the adjacent mainland coastline. Wild animal control, notably of feral cattle (Bos taurus) and horses (Equus caballus) in the Te Paki (Unuwhao / North Cape) part of its range is needed. In cultivation Cordyline obtecta does not appear to be much affected by ‘Cabbage Tree Sudden Decline’ (sensu Beever et al. 1996).
New Zealand Threat Classification System assessed this species as ‘At Risk / Naturally Uncommon’ Qualified ‘RR’ [Range Restricted], ‘SO’ [Secure Overseas] ‘Sp’ [Sparse] (de Lange et al. 2018).
