This species is reported to be relatively rare (Onana 2013). The population trend is suspected to be decreasing on account of ongoing habitat loss at all collection localities.

The main threats to this species are from trampling by livestock and the drainage of swampy areas (Onana and Cheek 2011). Two collections of this species were in the North Region of Cameroon, an area which is threatened by agriculture, livestock, and bush fires (Onana and Cheek 2011, Communes et Villes Unies du Cameroun 2020). Agriculture represents a vital component of Cameroon's economy and is estimated to be the main occupation of 70% of the population (Abia et al. 2016). In the North Region, much land has been converted for the growth of both food crops and cash crops, and agricultural land is visible around all of this species' Cameroonian collection localities (Communes et Villes Unies du Cameroun 2020, Google Earth 2020). It is, therefore, likely that this species has lost habitat to agriculture. Pastoral activities are also important in the area, and two approaches to raising livestock are used: an intensive method where livestock are raised in fenced pastures, and an extensive method where livestock roam wider areas (Communes et Villes Unies du Cameroun 2020). Grazing areas in the region are poorly managed, and so both trampling and overgrazing by livestock may pose a threat to this species (Communes et Villes Unies du Cameroun 2020). Anthropogenic bush fires are also common, with land burned to produce fresh grass growth for livestock (Onana and Cheek 2011, Communes et Villes Unies du Cameroun 2020). The species faces similar threats in Ghana where agricultural and pastoral activities are also prevalent (Google Earth 2020, Ntiamoa-Baidu et al. 2001, MOFA Ghana 2020). Farmland is visible around the collection locality in Ghana, and the species' habitat has likely been lost and degraded in this area. In Cameroon, the species has also been collected in an area with several mining concessions in Cameroon (Global Forest Watch 2020).

This species is not known to occur within any protected areas (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2020) and BGCI currently record no ex situ conservation sites for this species (BGCI 2020). Efforts should be made to re-find this species at its known sites to confirm its current distribution (Onana and Cheek 2011). Additionally, confirmation of the Ghanaian record of this species would be beneficial. Further research is also needed into the species' population status and trends, regeneration, and life history and ecology. This will facilitate the development of a plan to ensure its survival (Onana and Cheek 2011).
