The population size appears to be large, but with an estimated less than 10,000 mature individuals (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019). However, according to Hernández Sandoval and collaborators (2012), Beaucarnea stricta has a low number of individuals per hectare, and an age structure in which more adults persist than young individuals. These authors reported a density of 200 individuals per hectare in Oaxaca. Therefore, it is considered the current population trend is declining due to the illegal gathering and the habitat threats. In fact, the population size has been reduced of 30% in the last three generations (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019).

The main threat for Beaucarnea stricta is habitat loss caused by land-use change, whether by cattle farming or by other agricultural activities. For example, many sites where the taxon occurs, were used during the colonial period for pasture, raising goats, firewood collect and agriculture. This resulted in high degraded of the habitat (Lee 2014). A
