État de la populationExpert
The population size appears to be large, but with an estimated less than 10,000 mature individuals (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019). However, according to Hernández Sandoval and collaborators (2012), Beaucarnea stricta has a low number of individuals per hectare, and an age structure in which more adults persist than young individuals. These authors reported a density of 200 individuals per hectare in Oaxaca. Therefore, it is considered the current population trend is declining due to the illegal gathering and the habitat threats. In fact, the population size has been reduced of 30% in the last three generations (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019).

Description complète des menacesExpert
The main threat for Beaucarnea stricta is habitat loss caused by  land-use change, whether by cattle farming or by other agricultural activities. For example, many sites where the taxon occurs, were used during the colonial period for pasture, raising goats, firewood collect and agriculture. This resulted in high degraded of the habitat (Lee 2014). Additionally, wildfires and human-set fires with greater intensity occur every year, causing direct mortality. Another  threat is illegal over-collection (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019, L. Hernández-Sandoval).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
This species was assessed as Vulnerable in 1997 (Walter and Gillett 1998). Beaucarnea stricta is listed on  CITES Appendix II, in order to control the trade and avoid use that is incompatible with species survival (CITES 2019). The species is known from 31 ex situ collections (BGCI 2019). At national level, this species is included in the category of "Threatened" (A) of the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 (BGCI 2019, SEMARNAT 2010). The species occurs in the Biosphere Reserve "Tehuacán-Cuicatlán", but most of the population is outside this protected area. Additionally, there is a Municipal nursery in San Pedro Totolapa, Oaxaca where the taxon is cultivated. This nursery is a Management Unit for the conservation and sustainable use of wildlife (UMA) called Rancho "El Jabalí"(Hernández-Sandoval et al. 2013). It would be very important to continue with the conservation training among the residents of the Biosphere Reserve (Lee 2014), as well as to support non-agricultural and non-livestock activities to avoid the change of land use. It would be beneficial to recommend suitable production activities and livelihood alternatives in the region. In addition, improved monitoring of the habitat, population, harvest level, and trade trends is suggested.
