État de la populationExpert
This species has been described as rare. The population size appears to be small, with an estimated of less than 2,500 mature individuals. Pérez-Farrera and collaborators (2012) reported a density of 287 individuals per hectare. According to the analysis of these authors, the population of Beaucarnea sanctomariana retains ecological attributes that define it as an ecologically stable population although the population is not large. However, the high commercial demand of the ornamental rare plants markets has increased the illegal sales in the last years. Therefore, a decline in mature individuals of at least 20% is estimated to occur in the future (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019, Hernández-Sandoval pers. comm. 2019).

Description complète des menacesExpert
The main threat for Beaucarnea sanctomariana is illegal gathering. Another potential threat is forest fragmentation caused by state and private developments (highways, train communication tracks, and eolic energy complexes). Although cattle grazing is occurring, the growth of this species on steep rocks restricts the effects of trampling by animals (Pérez-Farrera et al. 2012, E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
At national level, Beaucanea sanctomariana is included in the category of "Threatened" (A) of the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 (BGCI 2019, SEMARNAT 2010). This species is also listed on the CITES Appendix II, in order to control the trade and avoid its incompatible use with species survival (CITES 2019). To date, no known wild subpopulations of B. sanctomariana are represented in Natural Protected Areas. This species is known from 4 ex situ worldwide collections. Although B. sanctomariana seems to have no serious alterations in its current population structure, it is advisable to encourage strategies for its protection given its rarity, endemism and the fact of having micro-environmental requirements. There is a need for tools that can provide an integrated assessment of human impacts on this species range and that can support decision making related to an area-based management plan and/or resource/land protection. In addition, it is suggested to improve monitoring of the habitat, population, harvest level, and trade trends.
