In Veracruz, the wild subpopulations are small, with a maximum recorded density of 161 individuals per 1.2 hectares, of these 59% were adults, 20% juveniles and 21% seedlings. In addition, only 40% of individual were found to be reproductive. All these inventoried individuals were found in flat areas and near towns or roads, where the proportion of seedlings and juveniles is lower than in places with steep slopes (Hernández Sandoval et al. 2012). There is no up-to-date demographic information that enables understanding of population trends, but according to Contreras and collaborators (2008), most subpopulations of this species are threatened with extinction because of habitat destruction due to urban expansion and increase in agriculture. Likewise, Osorio and collaborators (2011) and Hernández Sandoval and collaborators (2012) suggest that the trend is a decreasing population. In fact, it is projected a population size reduction of 80% due to the illegal trade and habitat threats. Regarding population monitoring, The Elephant’s Foot Network (Beaucarnea spp.) founded in 2008, monitors the situation of a number of species from this genus. The Network is coordinated by the National System for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (SINAREFI) at SAGARPA, and has a Strategic Plan for the Management and Conservation of species of Beaucarnea.

Description complète des menacesExpert
The main threats to the wild populations of Beaucarnea recurvata are habitat loss and illegal harvesting of wild plants for ornamental purposes, as they are subject to high demand on the international market. As such, the origin of parent material of live plants offered outside of Mexico is unknown. Regarding the first threat, historical records suggest that the majority of deforestation in the taxon's range occurred at the start of the eighteenth century. However, these rates fluctuated considerably with slight periods of reforestation. Although the number of forest patches tripled between 1973 and 2000, the average area of those patches reduced by almost 80 per cent during this period. Additionally, fragmentation has been identified in the ecorregions in which the species is distributed, mainly attributable to the extensive change in land use for the establishment of pastures for farming or by agricultural land and irrigation. Specifically, the habitat of B. recurvata in Veracruz demonstrate clear fragmentation (focused on the middle zone of the Basins of the Actopan and La Antigua Rivers. This has resulted in damage to the structure (population and sex), and to the natural regeneration processes of the wild populations of the species. With regard to the second threat, the seeds, seedlings, and adult plants of all Beaucarnea species have been collected for ornamental purposes since the 1980s (Hernández Sandoval 1993, CITES 2016, Contreras Hernández et al. 2017). Additionally, the presence of herbivory affects the establishment and survival of seedlings; causing a low recruitment rate (Osorio-Rosales et al. 2011).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
At national level, Beaucanea recurvata was included in the category of "Threatened" (A) of the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 (BGCI 2019, SEMARNAT 2010). However, the most recent assessment of the species which was made in 2014 workshop using the methodology established by NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, classified B. recurvata as a species ‘at risk of extinction-P’ (CITES 2016). This species was listed on the CITES Appendix II in 2015, in order to control the trade and avoid its  incompatible use with species survival (CITES Checklist website 2019). To date, no known wild subpopulations of B. recurvata are represented in Natural Protected Areas. B. recurvata is known from 133 Botanic Garderns worldwide (BGCI 2019), and many ex situ collections in Mexican institutions ("Jardín Botánico Fco. Javier Clavijero, Instituto de Ecología A.C.",  "Jardín Botánico de la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro", "Jardín Botánico de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México", "Xiitbal N' ek, Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán", "Jardín Botánico Roger Orellana”, "Jardín Botánico de Culiacán", "Jardín Botánico Africam Safari", "Jardín Botánico El Charco del Ingenio", "Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca", and "Jardín etnobotánico y Museo de Medicina Tradicional, Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia-Morelos". There remains much work to do to preserve this species and commercialize it with minimal impact on wild populations. There is a need for tools that can provide an integrated assessment of human impacts on this species range and that can support decision making related to the resource/land protection and habitat restoration. It would be beneficial to recommend sustainable production activities and livelihood alternatives to the destruction of the species habitat. In addition, it is suggested to continue the habitat, population, harvest level, and trade monitoring.
