The current population trend is considered to be declining due to illegal looting and habitat threats. The population size has been reduced by at least 30% in the last three generations. Furthermore, a 20% reduction in mature individuals may occur in the next 100 years. Hernández-Sandoval and collaborators reported that local people cut the inflorescence and use it as a Christmas tree. This activity is drastically affecting the crossed pollination, seed production and population renewal in the wild populations. Additionally, it is really hard to find seedlings and young plants of B. purpusii. In fact, seed germination percentage is 38%, one of the lowest rate in the whole genus and the lowest rate of growth (Hernández et al. 2009). The authors found about 50 individual/ha between 1988 and 2008 and observed only one new young individual in this period.

Among the factors that seriously threaten Beaucarnea purpusii are overexploitation of its seeds, seedlings and adult individuals, their slow growth, and especially the loss of its habitat (Hernández-Sandoval, 2012). The extensive change in land use for the expansion of the agricultural frontier, cattle ranching and urban settlements has caused a continuing decline in the EOO, AOO, and habitat quality. Additionally, this species occurs in exposed areas where frequent fires with greater intensity occur every year, causing direct mortality. Another threat is the high levels of looting.

Beaucarnea purpusii occurs in the Biosphere Reserve "Tehuacán-Cuicatlán". This species was assessed as Vulnerable in 1997 (Walter and Gillett 1998). Beaucarnea purpusii is listed on the CITES Appendix II, in order to control the trade and avoid its incompatible use with species survival (CITES Checklist website 2019). At national level, B. purpusii is the only species of the genus that is included in the category of "Danger of extinction (P)" in the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 (BGCI 2019, SEMARNAT 2010). Additionally,  the species is known from four ex situ collections (BGCI 2019). There remains much work to do to preserve this species and commercialize it with minimal impact on wild populations. On the one hand, research on in vitro regeneration has been succesful and can be a plant source in the trade market to diminish the population pressure on wild specimens (Vadillo et al. 2016). On the other hand, there is a need for tools that can provide an integrated assessment of human impacts on this species range and that can support decision making related to the site/area protection. Therefore, it would be beneficial to recommend sustainable production activities and livelihood alternatives to the destruction of the species habitat. In addition, it is recommended to improve monitoring of the habitat, population, harvest level and trade trends. With respect to the research needed, a detailed study of B. purpusii and B. stricta would be convenient in order to clearly differentiate them, as many herbarium specimens have been wrongly labeled as one or the other species. They are morphologically similar and occur in the same area, so a detail study of their reproductive characters is neccesary (Rojas-Piña pers. comm. 2019).
