État de la populationExpert
The population size appears to be fairly small. In 2016, Rojas-Piña and Alvarado-Cárdenas reported few mature individuals and even fewer young plants in the type locality. Local people confirm that this plant is very rare. Therefore, an amount of mature individuals of less than 2,500 is estimated in the entire range. These are experiencing a continuing decline due to the habitat threats. In fact, a continuing decline in the mature individuals of at least 20% may occur in the future (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019).

Description complète des menacesExpert
The main threats to the genus Beaucarnea are the change in land use and the fragmentation of ecosystems. More specifically for this species, the type locality is surrounded by human settlements and agricultural fields, and grazing is also occurring. Additionally, frequent fires set by people occur every year, which potentially cause direct mortality. There are relatively few patches of intact forest suitable for the species nearby, so the continuing decline in habitat quality is another important threat (Rojas Piña and Alvarado-Cárdenas 2016). Finally, given its probable rarity and that Beaucarnea species in general are ruthlessly collected for the horticultural trade, it is very likely Beaucarnea olsonii is already being collected for illegal sale (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
There are no current conservation actions in place and the species is not known from any ex situ collections (BGCI 2019). The habitat of the taxon is being seriously threatened, so it is necessary to consider protection measures in situ or conservation in botanic gardens or in a genome resourse bank as measures of ex situ conservation. There is a need for tools that can provide an integrated assessment of human impacts on forest biodiversity and that can support decision making related to habitat restoration and forest use. Therefore, it would be beneficial to recommend sustainable production activities and livelihood alternatives to the destruction of forests. In addition, it is suggested to monitor the habitat and population trend. Given the general anthropogenic pressure on the genus Beaucarnea as well as the serious issue of illegal extraction, it is recommended to increase the research efforts to better understand the trade trends of this species, in order to prepare a possible harvest/trade management plan for the future.
