In 1997, Cardel and collaborators reported a total of 6,000 individuals of Beaucarnea gracilis in 900 km2, with a density of 16.7 individuals/ha. In this demographic analysis, the ecological status of  Beaucarnea gracilis population was described as relatively good for adult individuals. They also reported a low rate of survival for seeds and seedlings, and an absence of young individuals without apparent reason. More recently, a study conducted field samples considering the populations of this species in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán region.These samplings were carried out in places where the same populations were studied years earlier. As a result, a reduction of individuals of 33% in the last decade was measured, without any new plant established in this period (Hernández Sandoval et al. 2012). However, these authors found a 89.9% of seed germination rate in lab conditions. In a preliminary plants age assessment, it was found that most of the present plants in the studied populations have over 50 years old, with specimens probably about 500 years old (L. Hernández-Sandoval pers. comm. 2019). The population trend is experiencing a continuing decline due to low natural recruitment, illegal trade, and threats to the habitat. In fact, it is considered that a population size reduction of 50% has taken place in the last three generations (E. Martínez Salas pers. comm. 2019).

One of the main threats to Beaucarnea gracilis is the extraction of seedlings for commerce. Additionally, it should be mentioned that the survival of the seeds and seedlings is very low due to being eaten by goats and rodents, drought, or they being washed away by rainwater. In addition to that, grazing, land clearing for corn cultivation, highway construction, and urbanization cause the continuing decline in AOO and habitat quality, as well as causing direct mortality (Cardel et al. 1997).

This species was assessed as Vulnerable in 1997 (Walter and Gillett 1998). Beaucarnea gracilis is listed on the CITES Appendix II, in order to control the trade and avoid its  incompatible use with species survival (CITES Checklist website 2019). At national level, Beaucarnea gracilis is included in the category of "Threatened" in the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 (BGCI 2019, SEMARNAT 2010). The species occurs in the Biosphere Reserve "Tehuacán-Cuicatlán", a national protected area. Additionally,  the species is known from three ex situ collections in the following Mexican Botanic Gardens: "Fco. Javier Clavijero, Instituto de Ecología A.C.", "Jardín Botánico de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México", and "Jardín Botánico de Zapotitlán Salinas". There remains much work to do to preserve this species and commercialize it with minimal impact on wild populations. Therefore, it would be beneficial to recommend sustainable production activities and livelihood alternatives to the destruction of the species habitat. In addition, it is suggested to improve monitoring of the habitat, population, harvest level, and trade trends.
