According to Kell (2011) this species is widespread and common in Romania, locally common but with a narrower range in Bulgaria, and not common and with a fragmented habitat in Italy. Population information is lacking for the rest of this species' native range.

The genus Asparagus is included in Annex 1 of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).

This species is not found in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (SGSV Data Portal 2013) or the National Plant Germplasm System (USDA, ARS, National Genetic Resources Program 2014). However, one accession of wild origin from Bulgaria is held ex situ at the Institute for Plant Genetic Resources 'K. Malkov' in Bulgaria (European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR) 2007–2010, EURISCO Catalogue 2010). Also, according to Botanical Garden Conservation International (BGCI 2013), this species has living collections in 22 botanical gardens worldwide, although the origin and location of the collections are not detailed in this resource (garden locations are undisclosed to protect rare and valuable plant species).

The Flora Croatica Database (2004) reports this species as being regionally Near Threatened and having national legal protection in 2004, 2006 and 2009. A. tenuifolius is also regionally assessed as Vulnerable in Switzerland (Moser et al. 2002) and Endangered in Italy (Conti et al. 1997), however no species specific threats, stresses or protection measures are given in these sources. This species is also protected in the Champagne-Ardenne Region of northeast France (Association Tele Botanica 2000-2010). It is found in many protected areas in Romania (Kell 2011) as well as the Luberon protected area in France (Information Center for the Environment (ICE) 2013).

As identified by Kell (2011), monitoring and management of this species within the protected areas in which it already occurs is recommended, while germplasm collection for ex situ storage is a priority for this species.
