This species is noted as being common in lowland areas on Tenerife (Bramwell and Bramwell 2001) and is also common in the rest of the islands, except for El Hierro.

The genus Asparagus is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. The species occurs in several protected areas.
EURISCO reports only one germplasm accession of A. scoparius which originates from Spain and is stored in the genebank of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Agrónomos, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (EURISCO Catalogue 2010). Germplasm collection and duplicated ex situ storage is a priority for this species.
