It is known from four subpopulations distributed along an specific habitat known as restinga, and separated by golas or narrow passages connecting the marine lagoon and the open Mediterranean Sea: Veneziola, Marchamalo, Lo Poyo and San Pedro del Pinatar. A continuous population decline has been observed (Carrillo et al. 2015, Sánchez Balibrea et al. 2015), particularly in Lo Poyo and San Pedro del Pinatar, where only 5 of the 21 previously recorded plants survive. One of these four subpopulations, Veneziola, contains more than 80% of the population (Sánchez Gómez et al. 2009, Carrillo López et al. 2015, Sánchez Balibrea et al. 2016). The population is inferred to be severely fragmented based on the observed decline, the fact that the species remains in four small subpopulations, which are isolated and with little probabilities of genetic exchange, and suspected to have reached no viable levels due to coastal urban development. The precise population size could not be estimated because the individual plants are difficult to identify (Carrillo et al. 2015, Sánchez Balibrea et al. 2016).

Urban development for tourism is a major threat to all subpopulations growing in very transformed littoral areas. Between 1981 and 2011 the natural habitat of the species was estimated to have decreased near to 50% (614 to 284 ha, according Sánchez Balibrea et al. 2016), as a consequence of 330 ha being urbanized. In particular, the main subpopulation of Veneziola, where more than 80% of the wild plants occur, is located on private land in an area subject of ongoing urban development for one of the largest tourist resorts in southern Spain, La Manga del Mar Menor.

Other relevant threats are drainage of wetlands, infrastructure development and competition with non-native species (Sánchez Gómez et al. 2009).

It does not occur in any specific natural protected areas. However, a subpopulation is located within the ZEPA of Mar Menor a designated as Ramsar Site, Wetland of International Importance. Two of the subpopulations are present in Sites of Community Importance under the Habitats Directive: Franja Litoral Sumergida de la Región de Murcia and Espacios Abiertos e Islas del Mar Menor (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2017). It is included in the Catalogue of Flora of the region of Murcia under the category of Special Interest, Decreto 50/2003 (Sánchez Gómez et al. 2009).

More than 2,000 plants have been planted in similar public and protected areas according to Regional Environmental Policy and by some naturalist associations, ANSE, with a 50% rate of success. More efforts are necessary to ensure the survival of this species, including site and habitat protection and raise awareness of the protection value of this taxon among the local population (Sánchez Gómez et al. 2009).
