Subsistence and commercial agriculture have supplanted native forest throughout the Isthmian moist forests. Flat areas have been converted to banana, coffee and pineapple plantations, while steeper areas have been logged and converted to cattle pasture. New roads have encouraged more human settlement of the region, and many of the forests are under tremendous logging pressure. Gold mining and pollution also threaten this region, even around protected areas. Although the montane forests are under less threat and more patches remain than in the lowlands, erosion is a major concern in the Talamancan highlands due to the conversion of forest to pasture. While the Talamanca Montane forest is relatively well protected, the recent but drastic elimination of middle elevation habitats in surrounding ecoregions has isolated the highland reserves and made their populations vulnerable to genetic degradation (WWF 2001).

Several subpopulations of this species (half of those actually known) are found within protected areas, with a good history of management and community involvement. About 20% of its extent of occurrence is composed of protected areas, which include: Palo Seco Protected Forest, La Fortuna Forest Reserve, and the General de Division Omar Torrijos Herrera and Santa Fe National Parks. No ex situ conservation measures are in place for this species.
