Colonization, road construction and other development projects, and logging are the main threats to the Colombian Pacific forests. Approximately 1/3 of the area has been cleared or degraded since the 1960s. The forests of Chocó, although they represent only 1/6 of Colombian forests, supply more than half of the country's wood (WWF 2001). Industrial production of African palm oil, uncontrolled gold mining and illegal growing of coca add to the list of causes of deforestation, which in turn causes serious erosion, affecting the different ecosystems of the region, including the coastal areas.
