This species is locally common, but the current population trend is unknown, and in Lebanon at least a rare species; H. El-Zein (pers. comm. 2017) reports no personal observations of this species and known of only one other recent record (from Ehden, in the coastal mountains of central Lebanon).

There are no immediate major threats to this species; however, as it grows at high altitudes, it could be potentially affected by climate change.

Some subpopulations occur in protected areas; e.g., Ehden nature reserve in Lebanon; H. El-Zein (pers. comm. 2017). Population monitoring is needed in order to ascertain the population trend. Climate change modelling is also recommended as this species occurs at high altitude and could be particularly affected by increasing temperatures.
EURISCO reports only one germplasm accession of A. cassium held in the genebank of the Millennium Seed Bank, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Wakehurst Place. The country of origin of the material is Lebanon (EURISCO Catalogue 2010). Germplasm collection and duplicated ex situ storage is a priority for this species.
