The steep slopes and high elevations in the area where this species has been found have helped to reduce human impacts. It has been recorded from pastures, although grazing is generally of a light impact subsistence nature (UNESCO 2003), in some areas there is overstocking with sheep and goats (United Nations Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre 2008). This bulb is widely grown in cultivation but it is not known whether there is any collection from the wild.

Specimens have been collected from within the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Area network. It is grown ex situ and it is conserved as a living collection, for example, in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh 2015) and seed is stored in the Wuhan Botanical Garden (iFlora 2012-2013).
