Allium apergii is found in an area smaller than 2 km² and numbers a few thousand individuals (2,000–3,000). It would be useful to implement a plan of population monitoring in order to verify its viability (Trigas et al. 2010). It usually forms small patches of 50–200 individuals quite close together, although larger patches with more than 500 individuals have been observed. Two distinct subpopulations each with several patches of individuals are known.

The area of Mt. Ochi was revisited during July 2023 and only a few individuals of Allium apergii were observed. The new available data are not adequate for an accurate estimation of the population size but they certainly advocate lowering the population size estimate to less than 1,000 individuals (probably much less).

Mount Ochi and its surroundings (Cape Kafireas and Dimosari gorge) has been proposed for construction of an extensive windfarm, which could seriously threaten the natural environment of such area (Trigas et al. 2010), especially by the means of the infrastructure accompanying the windmills (e.g., roads, cleared area around each generator). Around 800 wind generators have already been installed in nearby areas. The construction of one road has affected the southern subpopulation. Although the area of Mt. Ochi is heavily grazed, especially in summer and mainly by goats, A. apergii is not significantly affected, since no signs of herbivory were found on the examined plants. Trampling by animals, however, pulverizes the soil and leads to the uprooting of the bulbs.
