The main threat to the species is illegal collection of wild specimens and seeds for ornamental use that cause a continuing and slow decline in the population. It is suspected that the collection of agaves of this species to produce mescal caused a high decline of the population in the past and as a result the range of the species is now very restricted. The species is no longer utilised to produce mescal (Gonzáles-Elizondo et al. 2011).

The species does not occur in protected areas. It would benefit from management and inclusion in Mexico's NOM-059-SEMARNAT 2010 for legal protection of the countries native and endemic species.
