The subpopulations of this species are reported to be sparsely distributed, no shoots or colonies were observed (Starr and Villareal 2002).

The use of the species as fodder seems to be a threat to it, also the depredation of young plants by cattle and wild boar seem to affect recruitment as at the type locality only mature individuals were observed on very steep hills of difficult access to predators (Starr and Villareal 2002).
