Agave ocahui is a plant that is commonly eaten by cattle in its native habitat. Fires are frequent in areas of the Sierra Madre Occidental and many plants can be impacted. Subpopulations are mostly in areas distant from human settlements in inaccessible sites. Extended droughts and extreme temperatures are also impacting this species.

Large subpopulations of Agave ocahui are found within canyons in the Northern Jaguar Reserve, Sahuaripa, Sonora (Seinet.org, 2019). Agave ocahui is maintained ex-situ in living collections in 27 botanical gardens worldwide (BGCI Plant Search 2019)
