This species occurs in dispersed subpopulations, which are isolated in patches of suitable habitat containing the appropriate soil. Although the species is not declining rapidly, some subpopulations are exposed to more threats than others.

Land use changes from matorral habitat to agriculture and ranching have impacted the species directly due to removal of mature individuals, and indirectly by the trampling and consumption of the plant by livestock. In addition, its flowers are eaten locally, which reduces reproductive potential.
