Agave jaiboli

The recent demand for mescal puts subpopulations of this species at risk from over-exploitation. Over collection of Agave jaiboli for human consumption was noted in the past (Gentry 1982). Non indigenous people in Sierra de la Ventana used to decapitate the inflorescence, so the rosettes would last until they could be harvested for making mescal (Gentry 1972). Small subpopulations could be threatened by herbivory from rabbits, gophers and cattle. Land use change for cattle ranching, buffel grass pastureland, also affects this species.
