This agave is reported as abundant in the type locality and the additional four adjacent locations (Cházaro-Bazañez et al. 2010). The distance between both populations is about 30 km, and the area adjacent to type locality is well preserved. There is a high probability that this taxa can be found in adjacent mountains, which will increase its AOO and EOO.

No threats to this agave are known, but the local uses for food may have some impact on reproduction if is done in excess. Both localities where it is known to occur are directly next to urban areas and future expansion of these may impact the populations.
