This species of Agave is considered rare by Gentry (1982) who notes the type locality was destroyed by urban development.

At least two subpopulations of this agave are within the Reserva Especial Biósfera Cajón del Diablo, San Carlos Bay. There are 22 ex-situ collections in botanical gardens (BGCI 2019).
