There are only a few patchy subpopulations and the species is reported to be scarce. Based only on observation, the population age structure appears to be stable, and both sexual and asexual reproduction occurs (Hernández-Sandoval and Magallán-Hernández 2014).

The main threats to the species include temporary agriculture, where the land is abandoned after only one harvest. Mining, and over-grazing of juvenile plants by goats also affect the species.

The species is not present in protected areas and it is subject to ex situ conservation in the Cadereyta Regional Botanical Garden.
The area where the species occurs has been proposed as area of ecological importance in the "Programa de Ordenamiento Ecológico Local (POEL)", as well as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) and an Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE) area, the endorsement of which could strongly promote the conservation of this species.
