The species occurs in very small isolated subpopulation. The population size is estimated to be less than 3,000 mature individuals, with around 2,000 of them occurring in the northern patches.

The main threats to the species are agriculture and urban land expansion; there is also numerous small holder farms, including cows and sheep. Recreational activities such as quad motorbike rides on the area are a big disturbance to the species due to its frequency, every weekend, affecting mainly the plants inhabiting grasslands.
