This agave is documented to grow in large clusters (Gentry 1978) and it is locally abundant.

This species is threatened by marble, gold and gypsum mining and activities related to it such as road construction and movement of materials and soils. One subpopulation of the four known subpopulations of Agave cerulata ssp. subcerulata has been destroyed due to gypsum mining on San Marcos Island. One area of A. cerulata ssp. cerulata is currently impacted by gold mining and this impact is expected to increase as the mining activities in this area expand. Some of the islands, Tiburón and San Estebán, on which this species occurs are uninhabited and have no grazing impacts.
