The estimated generation length for this species is between 20 to 70 years, but is more likely to be in the range of 30 to 50 years. This is a co-dominant species of most xerophytic shrubland communities of the Cayman Islands. The population was calculated to comprise 1,080,800 mature individuals in the year 2000 (Burton 2008). This estimate was based on observed population density in multiple sample sites in suitable habitats throughout the Cayman Islands combined with land cover mapping that defined the areas of remaining habitat (Burton 2008). Reconstruction of pre-impacted habitats suggests that the past population of this species three generations ago was in the range of 1.3 to 1.5 million individuals. Due to current deforestation, visually estimated to be of the order of 3 km2 over the last decade, we estimate the 2013 population size to be approximately 1,044,800 individuals. Deforestation rates are believed to have been exponential in proportion with recorded human population growth. Human population is currently doubling every 12 years (Pedley 2007), implying that the future population of Agave caymanensis in 60 to 100 years time will be of the order of 195,000 to 562,000 individuals and will be largely restricted to protected areas.

Large-scale loss of habitat due to deforestation is expected to cause reductions in population, over the generation time for this species. In recent years, fire from agricultural clearing has been penetrating increasingly into surrounding habitat. The native vegetation is not fire adapted, therefore, when fire occurs, there is significant species mortality. There is also a potential threat from an invasive weevil (Scyphophorus acupunctatus) which is impacting the native populations of Agave species in similar habitats in neighbouring islands and in the horticultural industry. There are no bio-security measures in place which would detect and prevent the entry of this invasive weevil.

Protection of the xerophytic shrubland habitat on all three Cayman islands is the most pressing conservation need for this species. Lack of in situ conservation could potentially be fatal for this species. Also, a risk assessment is needed to determine the status of the invasive weevil in neighbouring islands, its pattern of spread, impact, and likelihood of entry. This is an attractive species which potentially could be introduced to the local horticultural trade. Cultivation could help increase the awareness of and contribute to the protection of this species. This species is included in the Cayman Islands National Biodiversity Action Plan 2009 (Cottam et al. 2009).
